Communicative English from second standard

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Oct. 25. The State Curriculum Committee, at its meeting today, decided to introduce `Communicative English' as a subject from the second standard onwards.

The Committee chaired by the Education Minister, Nalakath Soopy, has also decided to identify textbooks for this purpose, it was learnt. It was decided to make the biographies of the social reformer, Ayyankali, and Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, part of the syllabus, for standards six and seven.

Environmental studies will be introduced as a subject for standards five to eight in 100 select schools as part of a World Bank-aided Central programme. It was also decided to introduce law as a subject for standards five to eight and to identify or create textbooks for the same. A copy book would be introduced at the first standard to help children firm up their handwriting.

The Committee today approved the evaluation code for standards one to four and also approved standard 10 textbooks for the year 2004-05 for Malayalam, English, Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, Arabic, Urdu, Sanskrit, Social Sciences (1 and 2), Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology and Information Technology.

The meeting was attended, among others, by the Secretary, General Education, Mara Pandian, the DPI, M. Gopalan, the SCERT director, Jaleel, the Higher Secondary director, James Joseph, and representatives of the teachers' organisations, Ayira Sasi and Rasheed Kanicheri.
