In a statement here today, Mr. Udayabhanu said that two meetings of the chairpersons of various committees (except the subject committees) of the House were convened in November, 1998, by the then Speaker and one of the decisions taken at these meetings was to restrict to a certain level the number of tours and meetings of each committee. According to this decision, each committee dealing with financial topics was to keep the number of its meetings at four a month. These meetings could include up to two tours. The other committees were to be allowed three meetings, including one tour, every month. For convening an extra meeting, the concerned committee had to take special permission from the Speaker. The Public Accounts Committee had already met four times this month and the proposal for a fifth meeting, to be held on October 28, was initially rejected. However, when the committee explained the reasons for holding an extra meeting, the Speaker gave his permission to it to go ahead with the meeting.
