Replying to questions, Mr. Kunhalikutty, however, said, "the League would not set any deadline to end the issue, because it is not related to us alone". Earlier, inaugurating a district convention of the party, Mr. Kunhalikutty and other party leaders lashed out at the Leader of the Opposition, V.S. Achuthanandan, for describing the Muslim League as a `communal party'. "It was Mr. Achuthanandan who had attacked the Shariat, and he was responsible for not sanctioning any educational institutions to the minority communities who are plagued by educational backwardness," said P.K.K. Bava, MLA. Mr. Kunhalikutty said the League would hold separate and joint discussions with UDF partners to end the current impasse in the ruling combine. Asked about the possibility of the wrangles being sorted out, he said: "There is a national leadership for that party, we can talk to them also. We do not want to interfere in the internal issues of the Congress. But as a partner in the UDF, we want the issues to be settled amicably through dialogues." The IUML leader strongly defended the Marad agreement saying that it was a "considered decision of the party to directly hold talks with the Hindu organisations".
Murali meets Ahmed
Our Special Correspondent writes from Kozhikode: The IUML general secretary, E. Ahmed, held discussions with the KPCC president, K. Muraleedharan, in Kozhikode today in a bid to end the feud in the Congress. Mr. Muraleedharan later confirmed that the talks were in line with the decision of the IUML State working committee, which at its meeting here on Friday had authorised the party leadership to hold bilateral talks with constituents of the UDF to explore possibilities of defusing the crisis. The talks between Mr. Ahmed and Mr. Muraleedharan were held at the residence of the Public Works Minister, M.K. Muneer, in Nadakkavu, where they had come to attend a function held in connection with the 40th day of the demise of Dr. Muneer's mother, Amina Mohammed.
