Vikramjit clinches title

By D. Ravi Shankar

BANGALORE Oct. 25. Vikramjit Singh became the first ever Indian to win the overall gross winner in the Asia Pacific senior amateur golf championship at the Bangalore Golf Club on Deepavalli day.

At the end of the three-round tournament, DGC's 56 year-old golfer had written his name on the winner's roster pegging back New Zealand's Ron Sisson by three strokes. Vikramjit started the final round with a par on the first hole. Dropping a stroke on the second Vikramjit steadied himself to score pars on the next four holes.

On the seventh, pressure began to mount as he missed a ten foot putt for par and went on to make a double bogey. "I really made a hash of it on the seventh with a really stupid shot,'' Vikramjit recounted. The race for the title really hotted up with Ron Sisson of New Zealand making the scores all square on the tenth hole.

But the Kiwi's drive, which went out of bounds on the 13th saw Vikramjit establishing a two-stroke lead. Some steady play after that saw Vikramjit topping his birdie on the 15th with a series of pars till the last hole. Ron Sisson was quite pleased with his card of two over 72. Ron who plays regularly at the Taihape Golf Club in New Zealand had the best card for the final day.
