Road accidents claim 3 lives

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI OCT. 25. Two cyclists and an aged woman pedestrian were killed in separate road accidents in different places of Chengai (East) over the past two days. At Chromepet on GST Road, 20-year-old S. Manikandan was killed on the spot when a water tanker knocked him down at 7 p.m. yesterday.

The accident occurred when Manikandan was pushing his cycle to reach the eastern side of the road.

The driver of the tanker (No. TMT 6369) abandoned the vehicle and fled from the spot. According to Chromepet police, the water tanker was on contract with Metrowater and was proceeding to the city from Palur near Chengalpattu.

The accident took place close to Kakkalanchavadi, where Manikandan was staying. Residents' welfare associations said they had been urging authorities to take sufficient steps to ensure road safety on the stretch of GST Road between Tambaram and Kathipara Junction.

On February 13, a lorry knocked down a constable attached to the Chengalpattu police station, where the MIT bridge is under construction.

Among other things, residents have been demanding sufficient safety measures, including regulation of parking of vehicle on either side of GST Road, proper lighting and removal of accumulated sand that has eaten up nearly one-third of the road space between the airport and Tambaram.

At Madhavaram, a 55-year-old cyclist was killed on the spot when he was knocked down by an unidentified vehicle at 8.30 p.m. on Thursday. V. Rajaiah died on the way to a private hospital.

In another mishap, a 70-year-old woman, who was hit by a two-wheeler on the Chennai - Tiruvallur Road near Ambattur last afternoon, died in the KMC Hospital this morning. Residents of Guindy, Seeniammal and her husband Ponnuswamy were on their way to their son's house near Ambattur, where they had planned to join in the Deepavali festivities.

They got down from a bus at the Stedford Hospital stopping and were walking along on the edge of the main road when a two-wheeler rider hit Seeniammal from behind.
