A farce

Sir, — The Pappapatti panchayat election in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, has become synonymous with farce ( Oct. 21 ). The newly-elected chief has yet again resigned after the swearing-in. The State Government should de-reserve the village. Another village where Dalits are a force to reckon with, or at least form a significant minority, should be declared reserved. It may amount to a `surrender,' but commonsense dictates no other solution.

I. S. Kanthimathinathan,
Tirunelveli, T.N.
