Tendulkar's seventh century against Aussies

By Mohandas Menon

** Sachin Tendulkar's 100 extended his career tally of centuries to 35 in 316 matches in LOIs. He now has 13 hundreds at home and 22 in away matches.

** It was his seventh hundred against the Aussies in 36 matches, which makes him the scorer of the most hundreds against the world champions. Former West Indian opener Des Haynes had six in 64 matches.

** V.V.S. Laxman (102) playing in his 53rd LOI match recorded his second hundred of his career. This is now his highest career score. His only other hundred has also come against Australia — 101 at Margoa on 6-4-2001, which incidentally was the last time Laxman played against the Aussies. This means he now has back to back hundreds against Australia.

** The 191-run stand between Tendulkar and Laxman was only the second highest for India against Australia. Interestingly this same pair had put on a record 199 at Indore on 31-3-2001 for the second wicket.

** However the above partnership was the best for any wicket at this ground bettering the 175 for the 3rd wkt between Navjot Singh Sidhu and Mohammad Azharuddin against England on 4-3-1993. For the record, the previous best for the second wicket at this ground was the 124-run stand between West Indians Des Haynes and Richie Ricardson against England on 27-10-1989. Also the previous best for India for the same wicket was the 58-run partnership between Manoj Prabhakar and Vinod Kambli against England on 5-3-1993.

** The two hundreds provided the 14th instance, when two Indian batsman made hundreds in same innings in LOIs. This was India's first such feat against Australia. Incidentally, India became only the fifth team, after England (in 1985), West Indies (1996-97), Pakistan (1998-99) & Sri Lanka (2002-03) to achieve this feat against Australia.

** The partnership of 132 runs between Adam Gilchrist & Matthew Hayden was the best at this venue for the first wicket just eclipsing the 130-run stand between K. Srikkanth and Sidhu against South Africa on 12-11-1991.

** This loss was Australia's only fifth in 29 matches during 2003. The team had lost to Sri Lanka (once) and West Indies (in three matches - all in a row).

** The man of the match award was Tendulkar's 49th in 316 matches. He now has 10 such awards against the Aussies in 36 matches — the most by any player in LOIs. He went past the tally of 9 awards by West Indian Des Haynes.
