Govt. on high alert to meet cyclone threat

By Prafulla Das

BHUBANESWAR OCT. 27. The Orissa Government has put the administrative machinery on high alert in view of a deep depression over the east central Bay of Bengal.

Weatherman at the local meteorological centre said this evening that the system, formed nearly 850 km south-east of Paradip, was likely to intensify further and move in a north-westerly direction and cross the north Andhra Pradesh-south Orissa coast between Visakhapatnam and Paradip by Tuesday night/Wednesday morning,

Four years ago, on October 29, 1999, a super-cyclone had ripped apart coastal Orissa, claiming thousands of lives and damaging lakhs of houses.

Heavy rain and squally weather with wind speed reaching 70-80 km per hour is likely over coastal districts of south Orissa by tomorrow afternoon. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the open sea.

Taking stock of the situation, the State Government has asked the authorities in southern and coastal districts of Ganjam, Gajapati, Koraput, Rayagada, Puri, Cuttack, Khurda, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Bhadrak and Balasore to be fully prepared.
