Poor facilities in BC hostels saddens Minister

BANGALORE OCT. 27. The Minister for Social Welfare, A. Krishnappa, has expressed concern over the lack of basic facilities for children in the backward class hostels run by the zilla panchayats in the State.

Mr. Krishnappa was speaking at the inauguration of a divisional-level reorientation workshop for supervisors and wardens of hostels for backward classes here on Monday.

The Minister said that he had seen children not being served proper food during his visit to the hostels at 22 places recently. The facilities provided by the Government were not being extended to the hostel inmates, he said.

The children were made to do jobs that they were not supposed to do, he said.

Mr. Krishnappa also spoke about the poor construction of hostels. "Even a non-expert like me was able to discover flaws in the structure," he said. The Minister expressed concern over the fall in the education standards of children staying in hostels. "Without bothering the Government you (supervisors and wardens) should work towards improving the quality of education," he said.

Phalguni Rajkumar, Principal Secretary (Social Welfare), said strong action would be taken against erring employees. "We have already suspended 600 employees. I do not want any complaints from the public," the official said.

B. Basavaraj, Director, Department of Backward Classes, said the aim of the workshop was to improve the work culture of the department.

Supervisors, wardens, and hostel extension officers from Bangalore Urban, Bangalore Rural, Tumkur, and Kolar districts participated in the workshop.
