Mr. Poojary said that surveys conducted by the party had supported this. But this should not bring in complacency among party workers and they should strive hard to solve people's problems, he said. The Opposition was in disarray, the KPCC President said, and the Janata Dal factions and the BJP were fighting for the second spot as they knew that they would not win the elections. He said the Government had many achievements to its credit. Nearly 7.5 lakh houses had been built in the past five years. If poor people did not have houses, Congressmen should work to ensure that they got houses under government schemes. Mr. Poojary said he had discussed the issue with the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, and the Housing Minister, C.R. Sageer Ahmed. The MLAs should study the problems in their constituencies and raise them with the Chief Minister or Ministers. The Chief Minister and the Ministers were coming to the KPCC office and explaining the progress of government schemes. The MLAs could also raise the problems during CLP meetings. Criticising the Sangh Parivar, the KPCC chief said that the BJP had encouraged "Sati" in Rajasthan. Five Dalits in Haryana were killed for their alleged involvement in cow slaughter. The VHP considered the death of cows more important than the death of Dalits. The policies of the NDA Government had led to the closure of many profit-making PSUs. The private sector employed people solely on merit. Private companies were reluctant to set up base in the North-east. This has resulted in many poor people becoming jobless. If the Government did not provide them employment, who would? he asked. District-level training camps would be held for party workers. It was necessary for the party workers to know the achievements of the MP, MLAs, and the Government. A first prize of Rs. 15,000 would be given to persons who had a thorough knowledge of the Government's achievements. M.A. Gafoor, DCC President, welcomed the gathering. Vasanth Salian, district in-charge Minister, Vinaykumar Sorake, MP, U.R. Sabhapathy, Gopal Poojary, and J.D. Naik, MLAs, Bhujanga Shetty, President of the zilla panchayat, and Vanajakshi, Vice-President of ZP, were among those present. Later addressing presspersons, Mr. Poojary said that there would be snap polls to the Assembly if the NDA Government chose to go in for early general elections. He said the BJP-led NDA Government was under the impression that it would win the Assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. If that happened, early general elections were a possibility. "If there is an early general election, then we would like to have Assembly elections at the same time," he said. Mr. Poojary, however, expressed confidence that the Congress would win in all the five States, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, where elections are going to be held soon.
