Pondy Lt. Governor Malkani dead

Pondicherry Oct. 27. The Lt. Governor of Pondicherry, K.R. Malkani, died after heart attack in the General Hospital here today. He was 82 and is survived by two sons and a daughter.

The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, convened an emergency Cabinet meeting and adopted a resolution condoling with the death of Mr. Malkani, 15th Lt. Governor of the Union Territory. He assumed charge here on July 31, 2002.

The Administration declared a holiday for tomorrow, and a week-long mourning would be observed, Mr. Rangasamy said.

As soon as Mr. Malkani developed uneasiness, a team of doctors led by the medical superintendent of the hospital, rushed to the Raj Nivas, and he was admitted to the intensive coronary care unit at around 5.15 p.m.

The doctors, including specialists from the JIPMER and the Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, gave him treatment. But Mr. Malkani was declared dead at around 7.15 p.m.

Mr. Malkani's family members were expected to come from Bangalore and New Delhi and a decision on the funeral would be taken in consultation with them, the Chief Minister said.
