By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Oct. 27. The `Vayalar Ramavarma Literary Award' for the year 2003, was presented to the renowned Malayalam writer, M. Mukundan, at a solemn function held here this evening.

It was his novel "Kesavante vilaapangal'' that fetched him the coveted award carrying a cash prize of Rs. 25,000, a citation and a bronze statuette.

P.K. Vasudevan Nair, former Chief Minister and the president of the Vayalar Ramavarma Memorial Trust, presented the award to Mr. Mukundan, on the death anniversary day of the late poet and lyricist.

Saratchandra Varma, son of Vayalar Ramavarma and himself a lyricist, presented the citation. Mr. Vasudevan Nair also gave away the Vayalar Ramavarma Scholarship to V. Suraj, for securing the highest marks in Malayalam at the 10th standard examination, from the Asan Memorial School, Chennai.

Replying to felicitations, Mr. Mukundan said that writing "Kesavante villpangal'' was a painful experience for him. He was also apologetic about having wounded the feelings of at least some people through this work of his.

The author pooh-poohed the criticism that through this work he was trying to capitalise on the mass appeal of the late E.M.S. Namboodiripad, veteran Communist leader.

The poet, V. Madhusudanan Nair, and Aparna Rajiv recited Vayalar poems.
