Culvert delay: SHRC to register case

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Oct. 27. The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) would take up suo motu the issue of the hardship caused to the public due to the delay in the completion of the culvert at Thampanoor, the Commission's acting chairman, S. Balaraman, said here today.

He was speaking at a function got up to launch the subscription scheme of the magazine, "Residents'', brought out by the Federation of Residents' Associations (FRAT).

Dr. Balaraman said lakhs of rupees had been spent on the culvert so far, but this had only served to turn it into a major hurdle to the freedom of movement of road-users.

It amounted to a clear violation of human rights and the Commission would file a case naming those responsible for the construction of the culvert as the respondents, he said.

The Commission would aim at addressing the travails of the common man, the acting chairman said. No specialised knowledge was needed to understand the laws pertaining to human rights.
