Letters to the Editor
Sir, There can be no comparison between Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Sonia Gandhi ("Personality politics", Oct. 27 ). Mr. Vajpayee never claimed to be a prime ministerial candidate. The pre-poll NDA alliance unanimously took him as its leader and projected him as the prime ministerial candidate. He has proved his capability of providing a stable and working coalition government. In the case of the Congress, neither is any alliance in existence nor are its supporting parties expected to declare Ms. Gandhi their prime ministerial candidate.
M.C. Joshi,
Sir, K.K. Katyal says that Mr. Vajpayee has shown considerable skill in managing coalitions. It is not his personality but the NDA allies' own political exigency that has cemented them together. These days elections are hardly fought on personality issues and the candidatures of Mr. Vajpayee and Ms. Gandhi may not be questioned for both the parties have almost run out of worthy leaders.
M. Somasekhar Prasad,
