BJP flays Cong. stance on early Assembly elections

HYDERABAD Oct. 28. The State BJP President, N. Indrasena Reddy, has accused the Congress Legislature Party leader, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, of lacking consistency on the move to hold early elections to the State Assembly. He said the Congress wanted recurrence of drought so that it could defame the Government and derive political mileage from the suffering of the people.

Talking to reporters here on Tuesday, he said prior to the October 1 naxalite attack on the Chief Minister, Dr. Reddy wanted the State Government to be dismissed to facilitate early elections. But now he was opposing the move to advance Assembly elections.

Replying to a question, he said there were no indications yet that the elections would be advanced. The timing of the elections, however, was the prerogative of the ruling party. He parried a question on whether the ruling party would get sympathy if elections were advanced saying there should be a debate on naxal violence.

He said the BJP would definitely continue the electoral tie-up with the TDP for the Assembly elections.

To another question, he said the Union Agriculture Minister, Rajnath Singh, said a central team would tour Andhra Pradesh from November 3 to 7 for assessing the drought situation. The Minister also assured that further assistance would be given based on the report of the Central team.

Earlier Mr. Reddy led a delegation of people, displaced by the construction of international airport, from Shamshabad, Mamidipally and Ibrahimpatnam mandals to the residence of the Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. He said the Chief Minister had promised them justice. Mr. Reddy said the Government should provide compensation and houses to the displaced.
