Storm threat fizzles out

By Our Special Correspondent

Hyderabad Oct. 28. The deep depression fizzled out after crossing the coast this evening near Visakhapatnam. According to reports received by the Government, the impact was at the minimum, with the rain, accompanied by gales, being only "moderate" in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam and East Godavari instead of being "heavy" as predicted. The Government heaved a sigh of relief. The deep depression rapidly weakened into a depression even before it crossed the coast and further dissipated into a low-pressure area and lay over North Coastal Andhra and its neighbourhood.

The Director for State Met Office, C.V.V. Bhadram, said the phenomenon would weaken further and vanish. However, before this, there would be "scattered to heavy" rain in the aforesaid districts and in West Godavari tomorrow, accompanied by strong winds sweeping in southwesterly direction off and along the coast with 45-50 KMPH, he said.

Our Visakhapatnam reporter adds quoting J.V.M. Naidu, Director of the Cyclone Warning Centre: The deep depression had travelled at a speed of 600 km during the last 24 hours (from Monday morning to Tuesday morning).

Owing to the fast movement, the system did not intensify. It would have intensified had it been stagnant at least for sometime. On Tuesday, the State remained dry, except for the rain in North Coastal Andhra.
