Trinamool to boycott meet on rallies

KOLKATA OCT. 28. The Trinamool Congress will boycott tomorrow's all-party meeting convened by the Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee Government for evolving a political consensus to regulate rallies and processions in the city.

Announcing this from a sit-in demonstration in central Kolkata, the party supremo, Mamata Banerjee, said the Trinamool would stay away from the October 29 meeting, as it did not have the details of the proposal to be taken up for discussion. "While he (the Chief Minister) discussed the proposal relating to rallies in detail with the ruling Left Front partners, he did not bother to inform us at all," Ms. Banerjee told the gathering.

The Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) will also stay away from the meeting. "There is no point in participating in a such a meeting because we will bring out a rally or a procession whenever we think it is necessary," the SUCI secretary, Pravash Roy, said.

At a meeting of the Left partners on Monday, Mr. Bhattacharjee had suggested regulation of the time and place for rallies, processions and meetings in the city on weekdays.

Even though the Congress is opposed to the Government's proposal, it would participate in the meeting. The Bharatiya Janata Party, a Trinamool ally, is also expected to attend the meeting.
