Cyclone threat eases in Orissa

BHUBANESWAR OCT. 28. There was panic buying of essential items throughout the day in the coastal districts of Orissa, and it was a great relief for the people when they got information late in the evening that the deep depression in the Bay of Bengal had dissipated and there was no threat of a cyclone hitting the State.

The local meteorological centre said the deep depression, which had weakened into a low pressure area, crossed the north Andhra Pradesh coast close to Visakhapatnam this afternoon. Under its influence, only heavy rain was likely over Orissa during the next 48 hours.

It had started raining in many coastal areas since morning and people were afraid that the storm could cross the coast by evening. People were seen thronging market places during the day to buy extra essential items.

The issue was also raised in the Assembly by several members during the zero hour resulting in the Revenue Minister, Biswabhushan Harichandan, making a statement about the measures that had been taken to cope with the situation.

A majority of the people were apprehensive as it was on October 29 four years ago that a supercyclone had ripped apart coastal areas claiming thousands of lives.
