BJP to launch dengue drive

NEW DELHI OCT. 28. In another attempt to showcase that it had something positive to offer, the Delhi unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party today announced that it would launch a "Dengue Bhagao -- Delhi Bachao'' drive from October 30, in which all the party MPs, MLAs and Councillors will participate. All 16 districts of the party would organise free medical check-up and blood donation camps. The collected blood will be deposited with the Red Cross Society. He said the Election Committee meeting of the BJP scheduled for tomorrow had been postponed in view of this new programme of the party.

Addressing a press conference, the Delhi BJP president, Madan Lal Khurana, said the party had also decided to launch a cleanliness drive under this programme and all party workers would remove stagnant water in their respective areas to prevent the occurrence of this deadly disease. He said now the meeting of the Election Committee would be held on November 1 and 2 to shortlist candidates and send the same to the Central Election Committee. Charging the Sheila Dikshit Government and the Congress ruled MCD of having failed to tackle the serious situation arising out of the spread of dengue fever, which had already claimed more than 60 lives and thousands had been admitted to the various hospitals. He accused the MCD and the Delhi Government of supressing casualty figures and claimed that he had documentary evidence to support his claim that more than 60 people had lost their lives due to dengue fever.

Mr. Khurana said it was unfortunate that the Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, had failed to react to the sufferings of the people and charged that bungling had taken place in the purchase of fogging machines, which had delayed their delivery. He said the idea of the BJP campaign was to create awareness among the people and said if need be, he would not hesitate to spend money from the MPs Constituency Development Fund for tackling the dengue menace. But there was not much enthusiasm among the BJP workers on the new initiative of the Delhi BJP president as many of them thought that it would not be possible for them to deviate from the hectic political activity and participate actively in the new programme of the party.
