A BSF jawan in action during a search operation after militants lobbed a grenade at the telegraph office at Lal Chowk in Srinagar on Tuesday, injuring 36 civilians. Photo: Nissar Ahmad
The grenade fell on the roof of a shed under which several people were gathered to pay their telephone bills. Thirtyeight persons were injured. One of them, Ali Mohammad Joo, later died at the Soura Medical Institute. A little known militant outfit, the Kashmir Freedom Forum, claimed responsibility for the attack. The BSNL office is near Lal Chowk, less than 300 metres from the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammed Sayeed's residence which was targeted 10 days ago by militants. According to the outfit, "the security force bunker on the premises of the Central Telegraph Office was the main target." Today's attack comes a day after the Lashkar-e-Taiba threatened to raise the level of violence during the Ramzan month and warned the people to stay away from security installations.
Woman, child killed
Later in the day, an encounter between security forces and a militant in the Akhnoor area, 25 km from Srinagar, claimed the lives of one woman and a child and left five civilians injured. The militant, part of a three-member group that fought a long battle with the security forces yesterday, had apparently taken the family of Ashok Kumar, an employee of the Military Engineering Service, hostage forcing the security forces to hold back fire for a while. Two militants were killed and an Army Major injured yesterday. At 4 p.m. today, a police team, including the Superintendent of Police, Samuel, and the Deputy Superintendent of Police, P.P. Singh, went to the site to retrieve the bodies when they came under fire from the nearby MES quarters where the third militant is hiding. Additional troops have been rushed to the area. Today's incident was almost similar to the July 22 attack on the Tanda Army camp. In another incident, an Improvised Explosive Device went off on the Batote-Doda-Kishtwar road when a bus carrying Army personnel was passing by. While two jawans died on the spot a third died in hospital. Seven injured Army personnel were taken to the Military Hospital, Udhampur, where the condition of three of them is said to be serious.
