PM announces Rs. 520-cr. package for Nagaland

Kohima Oct. 28. Announcing a slew of measures for development of infrastructure and human resources in Nagaland, the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, today said the Centre would provide Rs. 520 crores to the State within the next two to three years.

Addressing a mammoth gathering at the Indira Gandhi Stadium here, Mr. Vajpayee said the proposed golden quadrilateral would be extended from Silchar (Assam) to Kohima and the Centre would provide Rs. 400 crores for the development of a four-lane express highway within the next two years.

At the same venue where he was accorded a public reception by the State Government, the Prime Minister said the Centre would provide Rs. 50 crores for the development of the road network in the State but asked the Government to utilise the fund judiciously.

He said the Centre would work together with the State Government to create 25,000 jobs in the areas of tourism, agro-based industry, village industry and horticulture.

Later attending the first convocation of the Nagaland University at the Civil Secretariat, the Prime Minister announced that the Centre would provide Rs. 35 crores for the development of infrastructure on the Lumami campus of the university in Mokokchung district.

The Prime Minister said the Centre would provide Rs. 10 crores each for setting up an IT centre and a centre for horticulture, floriculture and agro-processing in the State.

Mr. Vajpayee said, amidst applause, that the Centre would provide Rs. 15 crores for building a new Sainik school at Kohima, fulfilling a demand of the Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) Government.

``Let us leave behind all the unfortunate things that happened in the past. For too long this fair land has been scarred and seared by violence. It has been bled by the orgy of the killings of human beings by human beings. Each death pains me. Each death diminishes us. My Government has been doing everything possible to stop the bloodshed, so that we can together inaugurate a new era of peace, development and prosperity in Nagaland,'' the Prime Minister said.
