KPTCL recruitment process praised

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE Oct. 28. The Common Entrance Test (CET) might not have found favour with the managements of private educational institutions, and even the Government this year was vacillating over the time-tested CET module in regulating admissions to professional colleges. However, the CET and its method of admission was an inspiration to Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd. (KPTCL) for recruiting hundreds of engineers.

The CET module of admitting students through counselling was adopted by KPTCL with a few changes. Those selected as engineers were provided with appointment letters as soon as they completed the counselling process.

It was in May that KPTCL decided to recruit assistant engineers and junior engineers, not only for itself but also the four electricity supply companies — BESCOM, MESCOM, HESCOM, and GESCOM. KPTCL decided to recruit 830 assistant engineers and 385 junior engineers on contract basis and a notification was issued in newspapers in May.

The technical aptitude test (TAT) for the candidates was conducted by an external agency in July and the verification of original documents was done during August and September. The provisional list of candidates was published on September 22 and objections were called for from October 6. The final lists were displayed on October 10 and the selected candidates were called for an orientation course. Counselling of the recruits began from October 23. The recruitment process was so transparent that all details right from the application stage were made available on the KPTCL website. The application format was itself unique as it adopted the optical mark reader (OMR) process for computerised scrutiny of application forms.

With the recruitment process being so transparent, KPTCL has received kudos from the candidates and their parents.

The KPTCL Managing Director, K.N. Srivatsava, told presspersons here today that the organisation had adopted a unique and transparent system of recruitment and appointment.

The new recruitment would not burden the corporation. "I have given an undertaking to the Government that I will mop up ten times the amount incurred on them (the new recruits) by way of increased revenue collection."

When asked why the corporation did not go in for recruitment to fill all vacant posts, he said KPTCL had decided to absorb 1,200 engineers at the "cutting edge".

There would be another recruitment round next year, he added.
