Recruitment of teachers begins

BANGALORE Oct. 28. The Government has started recruiting 5,000 primary school teachers to fill the existing vacancies. The Minister of State for Primary and Secondary Education, B.K. Chandrashekar, told presspersons here on Tuesday that following a Government Order, the department had initiated the recruitment process with the assistance of the Central Admission Cell.

He said a notification calling for applications would be issued on November 5.

He said the recruitment of 5,000 government primary school teachers formed the first phase of the efforts to fill about 9,000 vacant posts.

Prof. Chandrashekar said the Annual Work Plan Budget of Sarva Sikshana Abhiyan for 2003-04 was finalised in July this year. He said this year's budget allocation for the Abhiyan was Rs. 336 crores. This contained several interventions to improve primary education in the State. A provision had been made for appointing teachers to new lower primary schools, upgraded primary schools, and additional teachers for lower primary schools and others. In all, 9,509 posts of teachers had been sanctioned under the Abhiyan for the year, he said.

Compensation

Prof. Chandrashekar said the Government had sanctioned Rs. 50,000 each to the relatives of the three teachers who were among the four killed in the recent train accident near Srirangapatna.

Another Rs. 25,000 was sanctioned from the Teachers' Benefit Fund. These were apart from the Rs. 1 lakh the Railways sanctioned to them.
