Mother, children among five drowned

BANGALORE Oct. 28. Tragedy struck Sathanur, when four children and a 30-year-old woman drowned in a lake, about 20 km from Kanakapura in Bangalore Rural district, this afternoon.

The victims have been identified as Pavithra (12), Prathima (10), Manoj (7), their mother, Chandrakala (30), and a relative, Umamaheswari (12), all residents of Sathanur.

Chandrakala, wife of Mr. Nataraj, had taken the children along with here to wash clothes in the lake around 3 p.m. Manoj is said to have strayed into the water unnoticed by Chandrakala. When he began to drown, he shouted for help. The others who tried to rescue him were also sucked into the water.

Police said there was no one around to save the victims. By the time the Sathanur police arrived at the spot, it was too late. Incidentally, the police station is only half a kilometre away from the lake.

The victims' bodies were recovered by the villagers and handed over to the police.

The Bangalore district Superintendent of Police, K. Srinivas, and senior district officials visited the spot. Sathanur police have registered a case.
