Ceiling collapses, five escape unhurt

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE OCT. 28. Five members of a family had a miraculous escape when the ceiling of their flat on the second floor of the "Economically Weaker Section (EWS) quarters" at Neelasandra collapsed on Tuesday night.

The incident occurred at around 9 p.m. at the flat of Robert, a painter, in Block No. 31 of the quarters, developed by the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP), which has 42 blocks with 36 flats each. Robert, his wife Mala, and their three children ran out of the flat on seeing the ceiling collapse, eyewitnesses said.

According to the residents, the tenements, constructed by the BMP 10 years ago, are in a poor condition. The balcony of a tenement collapsed in the recent rains, they said.

The residents claimed that though they had brought the poor condition of the tenements to the notice of the BMP authorities, they did not take up repairs. About 7,000 people live in the quarters. A resident said that after the ceiling of Robert's flat collapsed, they contacted the local Assistant Engineer of the BMP.

However, the official refused to visit the spot. The engineer allegedly said that he would go to the place only on Wednesday. Residents said they got a similar response from the BMP Control Room.

A few years ago, eight people were killed when the quarters for the BMP's "pourakarmikas'' at Marenahalli in Jayanagar collapsed in heavy rains.
