Letters to the Editor
Sir, This is with reference to the confidence-building measures announced by the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, vis-a-vis Pakistan. A spate of remarks by the establishment has not done much good for the cause. Yashwant Sinha describing the package as a win-win situation for India ( Oct. 28 ), and George Fernandes' comment "this is the last effort..." reinforce the thought that they were directed more towards the domestic audience with elections in mind.
Vivek Sharma,
* * * Sir, I refer to the U.S.-based South Asia expert, Stephen Cohen's remark that the Indian peace offer is fragile ( Oct. 28 ). But there is no other way out for India except to stay the course and refuse to get provoked. As the bigger nation, India should take the peace initiative forward by encouraging any measure that increases the people-to-people contact of the two countries. A day might come when the Wagah border post becomes a tourist spot like the erstwhile Berlin Wall.
V. Sivakumar,
