India & World

A court in Rostov region in south Russia sentenced the Indian nationals to one year in jail for illegal crossing of the Russian border. They had been detained in April when they attempted to sneak across Russia's border with Ukraine on way to Western Europe. Security officials said the Indians had been brought to Russia by an international ring specialising in smuggling of migrants from South-East Asia to the West. No member of the gang had been detained yet. Each Indian had paid $2,000 each to reach Moscow from Delhi and another $500 to be delivered to Ukraine. ``This is the biggest group of illegal migrants ever detained on the Russian-Ukrainian border,'' the Itar-Tass news agency quoted a press officer of the Rostov FSB security agency. ``Every year we investigate up to 10 cases of illegal migration in the region.'' The Indians will most probably serve their time in a local jail, as there is no agreement between India and Russia on exchange of convicted nationals.
