Heavy rain in Khammam, Warangal

By Our Special Correspondent

Hyderabad Oct. 29. Khammam and Warangal districts sprang a surprise by recording heavy rain early this morning, where there was no prediction for such a phenomenon. In contrast, the maximum rain gain made by the Visakhapatnam area before, during and after the deep depression crossed the coast did not exceed even 20 mm.

The early morning cloudburst gave Dummagudem a rainfall of 120 mm and Bhadrachalam 70 mm. Hanamkonda and Khammam recorded 30 mm each. Parts of Ranga Reddy and Hyderabad (Urban) districts made moderate gains with Hakimpet Airport recording 20 mm and Hyderabad city itself 10 mm.

The director for the State Met Office, C. V. V. Bhadram, said the depression, which was transformed into a low pressure area, had petered out completely. However, there would be light to moderate rain at a few places in Telangana and isolated falls in Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema on Wednesday, according to a forecast.

The scanty rain in the Visakhapatnam area yesterday, even while a high degree weather system like "deep depression" was on, baffled both the Government and the weathermen. One reason for this held out by the Cyclone Warning Centre at Visakhapatnam was that the system moved fast, covering a distance of 600 km within 24 hours (from Monday morning to Tuesday morning). The fast movement robbed the system of its potential to build up and intensify. The impact would have been severe if the system had been stagnant, according to the centre's director, J. V. M. Naidu.

Under the system, the average rainfall recorded by the core area like Visakhapatnam district was merely 16 mm, which was followed by Srikakulam and Vizianagaram with 11 mm each.
