BJP gets into election mode

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD Oct. 29. The BJP on Wednesday organised a meeting here of senior functionaries of the party in the State to gear up its machinery for the elections.

The meeting was attended by the party's zonal observers at the State level, Assembly-level convenors and joint convenors, MPs, MLAs and State executive members.

The State BJP president, N. Indrasena Reddy, emphasised the role of the Assembly-level convenors and joint convenors in the preparations for the polls. He recalled the success of the political classes conducted by the party in various districts earlier this month. The party would organise service-oriented programmes to mark the birthday celebrations of the Prime Minister, A.B. Vajpayee, on December 25.

The Union Minister of State for Urban Development, B. Dattatreya, lashed out at the Congress for targeting the BJP at the hustings. He wondered why the Congress was scared of the BJP when it was of the view that the latter's strength in the State was not sufficient enough. He ridiculed the `bankruptcy' of leadership in the Congress.

Mr. Dattatreya had no objection to Sonia Gandhi remaining AICC president but doubted her ascendance to the Prime Ministership of the country given the controversy about the issue of her nationality.

He said Sharad Pawar and Mulayam Singh, who had been supporting the Congress, were gradually distancing themselves from the party. The Congress was responsible for the growth of naxalism and factionalism in the State.

The Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Ch. Vidyasagar Rao, called for implementation of the `land to the tiller' programme to help the landless. The meeting was also attended by the BJYM national president, G. Kishan Reddy, and the Deputy Mayor, Subhash Chanderji. The Musheerabad MLA, K. Laxman, in his welcome address, said the State unit had an important responsibility of increasing its representation in Parliament from the State. The meeting adopted a resolution condoling the death of the Pondicherry Lt. Governor, K.R. Malkani.
