Afro-Asian Games
By Our Special Correspondent
In the women's 63 kg competition Deng Huijie ensured that Chinese domination continued as she took the gold with a total of 232.5 kg and also made a valiant attempt to break the world record in the clean and jerk but failed. In the men's section the silver also went to an Iranian lifter Omid Noidj who totalled 330 kg and took the silver by virtue of lesser body weight compared to Sedov Sergey of Kazakhstan who also totalled 330 kg. Omid weighed in at 87.65 kg while Sedov had a bodyweight of 87.80 kg. In the women's 63 kg competition Deng Huijie was streets ahead of the other two. After Haritha of India had chalked up a best of 87.5 kg and Anike Ayodeji of Nigeria had registered a best of 90 kg, the 23-year-old Chinese girl entered the fray at 95 kg and lifted the barbell with ease. She then successfully hoisted 100 kg and then 102.5 kg to win the snatch comfortably. In the jerk, Haritha had a best of 107.5 kg in her second attempt. She failed with 112.5 in her third attempt. Anike chalked up 120 kg in her second attempt and failed with 122.5 kg. Deng first lifted 125 kg and then lifted 130 kg with her second attempt. The results: Men: 94 kg: 1. Ali Dehghaniyan (Irn) 142.5 kg + 190 kg = 332.5 kgs. 2. Omid Noidj (Irn) 150 + 180 = 330; 3. Sedov Sergey (Kaz) 152.5 + 177.5 = 330. Women: Deng Huijie (Chn) 102.5 + 130 = 232.5; 2. Anike Ayodeji (Ngr) 90 + 120 = 210; 3. P. Haritha (Ind) 87.5 + 107.5 = 195.
