Tamil Nadu-Chennai
By Our Special Correspondent
Earlier, it sanctioned a third line in the last budget, allotting Rs. 10 crores last year and Rs. 8 crores in the current budget as against the total cost of Rs. 53.23 crores. Work is on for laying a third line. The Ministry has given the nod for the fourth line in the supplementary budget presented recently. It will cost another Rs. 53.23 crores. A token allotment has also been made for the fourth line. With the addition of two more lines in the section, there can be four lines from Beach to Attipattu, a distance of about 25 km, two of them allocated exclusively for EMU traffic. Dedicated lines, officials say, will enable the railway administration to operate more EMU services, giving relief to commuters. Commuters from Tiruvottiyur and Ennore say that they are getting a raw deal from the administration as it runs fewer services than in the Beach-Tambaram and Chennai-Arakkonam sections. A constant refrain by the administration to representations for more services was that the existing line capacity did not allow operation of more services, said the commuters.
