Efforts on to make city slum-free by 2010: Dattatreya

HYDERABAD OCT. 29. An additional 5,000 housing units will be grounded in Hyderabad under the Valmiki Ambedkar Awas Yojna (VAMBAY) taking the total sanctioned units in the district to 13,000. Efforts are on to ensure that Hyderabad becomes a slum-free City by 2010, says the Union Minister of State for Urban Development, Bandaru Dattatreya.

He was laying the foundation-stone for a VAMBAY colony at Bheema Maidan beside the NTR Stadium here on Wednesday. The Musheerabad MLA, K. Lakshman, presided over the programme.

Under the scheme, it was also proposed to construct 57,000 individual sanitary latrines. The Government had evolved the scheme with a view to address the housing needs of the urban poor. The unique part of it was that the Government provided 50 per cent subsidy, Mr. Dattatreya said.

At Bheema Maidan, 350 houses would be built at a cost of Rs. 2.10 crores. Each house, admeasuring 227.37 sft, would be built in a G plus-three structure with a unit cost of Rs. 60,000. Of this, the Central subsidy was Rs. 30,000, bank loan Rs. 24,000 and the beneficiary contribution was Rs. 6000. Weaker sections families, affected by the 2000 floods from Bose Nagar, Dr. Ambedkar Nagar, Arundhati Nagar, Tata Nagar, Sanjay Nagar, Nehru Nagar, Sai Nagar, Ratna Nagar, would be rehabilitated. Infrastructure facilities such as roads, water, electricity and drainage would be provided at a cost of Rs. 15.10 lakhs, Mr. Dattatreya said.

He complimented the Musheerabad MLA for taking interest in grounding 1,900 housing units at a cost of Rs. 11.72 crores in his constituency.

The BJP was committed to redeeming its pledges, the Union Minister said and urged people to support the party which was striving for development. Mr. Dattatreya was mobbed by slum-dwellers seeking houses and pattas.

The Mayor, T. Krishna Reddy, appreciated the efforts made by Mr. Dattatreya to bring Central funds for development of the City. He also listed the steps taken by the MCH in improving the facilities in slums.

Earlier, Dr. Lakshman thanked the Chief Minister for providing land near the NTR stadium for providing housing under the VAMBAY. The scheme was possible with cooperation of Centre and State, he said. The Domalguda corporator, T. Ravinder, also spoke.
