New Delhi Oct. 30. The suspended Delhi University lecturer, S.A.R. Geelani, who was one of the two persons acquitted yesterday by the Delhi High Court in the Parliament attack case, today stepped out to freedom after nearly 23 months in Tihar jail.

Afsan Guru, the other person acquitted, also walked out of the jail a free woman. Ms. Afsan is the wife of Shaukat Guru whose death sentence has been upheld by the High Court.

Her lawyer Nitya Ramakrishnan said that Afsan ``had a difficult experience in the jail, but after her release she looks composed and dignified.''

Mediapersons had earlier gathered at the prison, but Mr. Geelani was released from a gate used only by the Director-General of the jail. The civil rights activist, Nandita Haksar, and Mr. Geelani's family members took him away. Mr. Geelani's wife, Arifa, had come to the prison at the crack of dawn along with her son, Atiq, and father, Mohammed Abdullah.
