Jogi meets Lyngdoh, counters charge

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI OCT. 31. The Chhattisgarh Chief Minister, Ajit Jogi, today met the Chief Election Commissioner, J.M. Lyngdoh, here and countered the charges that he was violating the model code of conduct.

He alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party and his political rivals were filing ``frivolous, false and fabricated'' complaints with the Election Commission against his Government.

After an hour-long meeting with Mr. Lyngdoh, he told presspersons that he had requested the Commission to stop the `misuse of official machinery by the BJP for electioneering.'

He alleged that the BJP-led Central Government was ``misusing'' the media to publicise its work in Chhattisgarh ahead of the December 1 elections.

On the Opposition complaint that the State Government was distributing school bags with the Chief Minister's photograph embossed on them, Mr. Jogi said that after the Commission's directive, the State Government stopped the distribution.

He said the Commission's instructions were being ``strictly complied with'' and requested that before taking any action, the Commission should provide an opportunity to the Congress to state its case.

In a memorandum to the Commission, Mr. Jogi said the purpose of his visit was to bring to its notice ``certain glaring incidents of miscarriage of justice'' and that this could have been due to ``gross misrepresentation of facts by the complainants''.

Referring to the complaints about two District Collectors travelling with him, he said that they were part of the high-level security provided to him and that they did not take part in any political function.

A large number of party workers thronged the Nirvachan Sadan raising slogans cheering the Congress and Mr. Jogi. Mr. Lyngdoh is scheduled to visit the State next week.
