Renewable energy sources to get boost

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE Oct. 31. The Minister of State for Energy, Basavaraj H. Patil, has promised that the Government will go "all out" to support the development of more renewable energy sources in the State.

Mr. Patil made the announcement at a seminar entitled "Biomass and Alternative Sources of Energy" organised by the Greater Mysore Chamber of Industry and Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Ltd. (KREDL).

Renewable energy sources currently account for less than three per cent of the State's energy consumption, but the Government has set itself a target of increasing this proportion to 10 per cent by 2012.

B. Shivalingaiah, Managing Director, KREDL, said "renewable bio-gasification plants are best suited to supply the needs of India's villages where the supply of biomass could be continuously maintained through agricultural residues, creating job opportunities for rural youths".
