Top TV personalities to work for DD News

HYDERABAD Nov. 1. The Chief Executive Officer of Prasar Bharati, K.S. Sarma, has said that top television personalities, including Rajat Sharma, Rajeev Malhotra and Nalini Singh, are being contracted to work for the round-the-clock DD News Channel to be launched on Monday.

Speaking to presspersons here today, Mr. Sarma said that another well-known personality, Deepak Chaurasia, would also work for the channel.

The signature tune of the DD was changed and services of top class agencies were hired for transmission.Mr. Sarma said the Central Government had sanctioned Rs. 20 crores to run the channel in the first five months and another Rs. 54 crores each year for the first three years to meet the recurring expenditure.

Mr. Sarma announced that a 24-hour radio news channel on the shortwave would be launched on April 2 next year.

It was also decided to cover 22 per cent of the so far uncovered geographical area of the country through the KU band satellite so as to provide TV viewership to the people residing in remote areas. Nearly ten per cent of the population is residing in the uncovered area.

There would be 30 channels, 15 of Doordarshan and 15 of private channels.
