Compensation sought for fishermen

By Our Staff Correspondent

NEW DELHI NOV. 1. The National Alliance of People's Movements has expressed shock over police action on fishermen going towards the Jambudwip Island in the Bay of Bengal.

The national coordinator of the alliance, Medha Patkar, in a statement said the action of the Left Front Government was against the Supreme Court orders of August 25, 2003 and in violation of the fisher folk's right to livelihood.

Seeking an apology and compensation from the State Government, she demanded an immediate dialogue on the issue and a thorough investigation to assess the situation on the island along with its legal, social and environmental aspects so that a written understanding is reached between the Government and the fishermen.
