DGP orders drive against corruption

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Nov. 1. The State police have launched a special drive to curb corruption at the cutting edge level of law enforcement. Special branch Dy.SPs in districts and cities have been asked to function as Vigilance Officers as part of the drive, according to a press release issued here today by the Director General of Police (DGP), P.K. Hormese Tharakan.

In the event a police official seeks or accepts bribe, members of the public could approach the Dy.SP (Special Branch) and lodge a complaint. If the bribe is sought by an official above the rank of Dy.SP, the public could lodge their grievance with the IG (Headquarters), M.N. Krishnamoorthy. The IG (Headquarters) can be contacted over telephone 2728415, said the release.

The identity of the informant will be kept a closely guarded secret. Moreover, the informant will be given full protection, the DGP said. Slides will be exhibited at all cinema halls to encourage the public to report police corruption. The slide will state among other things that `police service is free and seeking bribe for the service is punishable'.

The DGP has ordered all district SPs to conduct weekly surprise inspections at police stations and police offices under their jurisdiction on a random basis. The report of these inspections would be send to the DGP on the basis of which action would be taken. Mr. Tharakan said there would be no delay in taking action on complaints found to be genuine.

The DGP said that the functioning of the Highway Patrol was being stringently monitored in the wake of complaints from the public.
