'Rajyotsava Award selection panel deserves praise'

BANGALORE Nov. 1. In the light of complaints and charges that the selection of candidates for the Rajyotsva Award "has not been transparently fair", the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, today said that the "selection process is a difficult job as perspectives differ, and the Rajyotsva Award selection committee deserves congratulations for its meticulousness".

Mr. Krishna was speaking after presenting the Rajyotsva Award to 56 persons (two in absentia) and four institutions here. Stating that the Government was honoured in honouring the award winners, he said Rajyotsva was an occasion to recognise the significant contribution made by people and institutions to the overall development of the State.

The Minister of State for Kannada and Culture, Rani Satish, explained the selection process.

Vimala Rangachar spoke on behalf of the award winners. The Secretary, Kannada and Culture Department, Usha Ganesh, welcomed the gathering.

Demonstration

A large crowd, which could not witness the presentation of the awards, staged a demonstration and drew the Chief Minister's attention to the inadequate seating arrangements as soon as he came out of Ravindra Kalakshetra, the venue of the function. The disappointed crowd suggested that events such as presentation of the State award should be held in a spacious venue in future.

Mr. Krishna reportedly promised that the Government would consider the suggestion.
