The eminent Sanskrit scholar and writer, S.K. Ramachandra Rao, who conferred the award, said Dr. Hanagal had dedicated her life to music and continued in the field despite facing many problems. The main objective of the award is to promote Indian classical music. The first award was presented to R.K. Srikantan in 2002.
