Rare birds arrive at Tirupati zoo

TIRUPATI. Nov. 1. A flock of 93 cute-looking birds belonging to 14 species today flew into the Sri Venkateswara Zoological Park here.

The winged ones are part of a major flock of 290 birds specially sent to the Nehru Zoological Park, Hyderabad, by the Central Ministry of Environment and Forests. They were said to have been imported from countries like Africa, Australia, Indonesia, North-East and South-East Asia and some from Indian sub-continent as well and despatched to the zoos and aviaries in different states.

Some of the rare and exotic birds that entered the Tirupati Zoo today adding colour to its bird enclosure are: Australia's sulphur-crested cockatoo, African grey parrot, rose-ring parrot from the Bali islands of Indonesia, masker love birds and fisher's love birds from Tanzania.

The Tirupati Zoo Curator, Saravanan, has said that with the latest arrivals, the strength of the zoo's aviary has gone up to 273, a massive and prestigious collection by any standard. The AP Government has earmarked to the Tirupati zoo an annual grant of Rs.40 lakhs to meet the increasing maintenance charges in the wake of the new arrivals.
