The decision was taken at a late night meeting of the PCC presided over by the KPCC President, Janardhana Poojary. The newly appointed President of the Bagalkot District Congress Committee, Sidhu Nyamagouda, also attended the meeting. The election of the president and the vice-president of the panchayat is scheduled for November 3. According to sources, the expulsion of Mr.Malaghana was swift. It was noted that he was attempting to continue as the President for a second term of 20 months defying the party policy of a single term for the heads of panchayat raj bodies. However, what brought about the extreme action was that he had allegedly kidnapped some of the members of the panchayat and held them incommunicado to thwart the election. Once the PCC recommended action against Mr.Malaghana, the disciplinary committee headed by the Senior Vice-President, H.Hanumanthappa, met in the early hours of Saturday and favoured his expulsion. The PCC then expelled Mr.Malaghana for six years. Meanwhile, the AICC General Secretary in charge of the State, Vayalar Ravi, will be in the City on Sunday and Monday. He is expected to meet the partymen. Sources in the PCC said that the main purpose of his visit was in connection with the selection of party candidates for the biennial elections to the 25 seats in the Legislative Council to be filled from the local bodies.
