University officials said those who had failed in the previous two examinations could write the `arrear papers' and only the new marks would be shown in the final marksheet. All engineering colleges have been affiliated to the Anna University since last year and students who joined BE/B.Tech and B.Arch after June 2001 are writing examinations conducted by this university. As the success rate was only between 30 and 50 per cent in most of the colleges, the managements and principals wanted the university to help the students. Originally, the university told the affiliated colleges that the students of the 2002 batch (I and II semesters) and the 2001 batch (III and IV semesters) would appear for all arrear papers in November 2003. However, at the last Syndicate meeting, it was felt that the students could find it difficult to clear all arrear papers in a single attempt. So the Syndicate approved the suggestion that they be allowed to appear in the November 2003 or in April/May 2004 examination. However, the fees already paid for the November 2003 examination would not be refunded or adjusted for those who did not appear this time.
