TESMA charge sheet presented against Karunanidhi

CHENNAI, NOV. 1. The city police have submitted to a court here separate charge sheets against the DMK president, M. Karunanidhi, and three other political leaders for allegedly instigating government employees to strike work in July.

The charge sheets have been presented against the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee working president, E.V.K.S. Elangovan; the CPI State secretary, R. Nallakannu, and the State Secretary of CPI (M), N. Varadarajan, besides Mr. Karunanidhi.

The charge against them is that the instigated the employees and teachers, coming under essential services, to go on strike with a view to paralysing the government machinery and the administration.

According to Section 5 of the Tamil Nadu Essential Services Maintenance Act, "Any person who instigates or incites other persons to take part in or otherwise acts in furtherance of a strike which is illegal under this Act, shall, on conviction, be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years or with a fine which may extend to Rs. 5,000, or with both".

The City Central Crime Branch registered the first information report in the case in August. The charge sheets have been presented to the court of the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Egmore. Its order on the charge sheets is expected next week.
