This Day That Age
The Wiener Zeitung of Vienna, Austria, celebrated its 250th birthday on the 31st of October 1953. The journal was stated to be the oldest newspaper in the world, having appeared continuously since 1703, except for the seven years when it was suppressed by Nazis during the German occupation of Austria. That was not Wiener Zeitung's first clash with authority. A brush with Napoleon had happened much earlier. When Napoleon was defeated, for the first time, at the Battle of Aspen in Austria, this paper was asked to publish a report claiming victory for Napoleon. The editors slipped in comments which enabled the public to realise what the truth was by reading between the lines. The French realised what he had done, and that issue of the paper was confiscated. The editor had to flee for safety from the wrath of those whom he had circumvented.
