Urban decay

Sir, — In the editorial "Long overdue" ( Nov.1 ), you have rightly focussed on the imperative for socially responsible and accountable town planning. Thanks to the laissez faire approach of the governments in the States and at the Centre compounded by population growth, there is considerable strain on the infrastructure as evidenced by the poor quality of electricity, water supply and waste disposal not to speak of the hassles in commuting. One hopes that the Centre's draft notification will adequately help face the challenges of the future.

N.K. Suryanarayanan,
Bangalore
