Letters to the Editor
Sir, Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, doyen of music, who passed away on Oct. 31 was a man of indomitable will. He had a prodigious memory. Reclining in his favourite easy chair regaling visitors with anecdotes laced with humour, he could be profound, light-hearted, apocryphal, sardonic and gently ironic. Never was he malicious or offensive.
R. Ramachandran,
Sir, Famous for his chaste rendering of classical tunes, `Semmangudi' will be remembered for his contribution to make the annual Tyagaraja aradhana in Thiruvaiyaru a resounding success.
R. Sekar,
Sir, Semmangudi's exposition of krithis had a vigour that captivated the young and the old alike. The piece, Ksheenamai ,that he sang in the Music Academy in 1967 with Lalgudi Jayaraman as accompanist reflects this. He was at his best in the majestic rendition of the Thodi piece, Sri Krishnam Baja Manasa. Like many rasikas, the two krithis will miss him.
T.S. Gopal,
