Canal linking Andaman Sea to the Gulf of Thailand sought

By Our Staff Reporter

Pondicherry Nov. 2. The Dravida Peravai has appealed to the Prime Minister, A.B. Vajpayee, and his Thailand counterpart, Thaksin Shinawatra, to construct a canal linking the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand to cut short the distance to eastern ports in Japan and China by 1,500 nautical miles.

In a press release here, N. Nandivarman, general secretary, said the canal would be an extension of the Tenth Degree channel in between Andaman and Nicobar islands.

The canal would not only boost the economy of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands but would also benefit Haldia, Paradeep, Visakapatnam, Chennai and Tuticorin ports.
