Protesting cable operators resort to TV blackout

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUPATI Nov. 2. Sunday turned out to be boring for denizens of Tirupati due to the day-long cable TV blackout resorted to by local cable operators.

All satellite channels remained off air in Tirupati from 8 a.m. to between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., with the cable operators deciding to go for a blanket blackout to express their protest over the alleged murder attempt on a fellow operator.

Suburban Padmavathipuram is rife with cable TV rivalry, with the sarpanch himself donning the avatar of a cable operator to keep the `monopolistic pricing local operator' at bay. He enjoyed support from the residents too as his tariff was much lower.

It was alleged that the local operator was roughed up on Saturday night, and was later admitted to a local hospital for treatment. As no action was initiated against the culprits despite a police complaint, the operators opted for the blackout.

Notwithstanding numerous phone calls from residents to the MSOs, the services were resumed only late in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, the Chittoor district consumer council has taken serious exception to the blackout and called it a case of deficiency in service. The council's president, P. Raja Reddy, termed it unfortunate that the operators sought to rub off their personal grievances on to the consumers, who had every right to view channels of their choice.
