Sai Jayalakshmy beaten

NEW DELHI NOV. 2. The top-seeded Sai Jayalakshmy lost to the fourth-seeded Franziska Etzel of Germany 7-6, 6-7, 3-6 in the semifinals of the second $10,000 ITF women's circuit tennis tournament in Lagos, Nigeria.

The 574th ranked Sai, who had lost in the final the previous week, had beaten the fifth-seeded Rebecca Dandeniya of Britain 7-5, 7-5 in the quarterfinals, after struggling past Femi Odeyemi-Mus of Nigeria 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 in the pre-quarterfinals. Sai had powered past qualifier Blessing Anuna of Nigeria 6-1, 6-0 in the first round.

The third-seeded Liza Pereira lost 3-6, 6-2, 4-6 to the eighth-seeded Marija Abramovic of Croatia in the quarterfinals. The 629th ranked Liza had beaten Nigerian girls, Fatimah Abimu 6-2, 6-3 and qualifier Ayoola Shelle 6-0, 6-2 in the first two rounds in that order.

The third Indian girl, Nandini Perumal lost 2-6, 5-7 to Rebecca Dandeniya after beating qualifier Abiodun Oyegoke of Nigeria 6-2, 6-0 in the first round.

In doubles, the top-seeded Sai and Liza lost in the semifinals 5-7, 3-6 to Heidi El Tabakh and Yomna Farid of Egypt. Incidentally, Sai and Liza had lost to the same opponents in three sets in the first round the previous week.

The Indian duo had beaten Seun Ogundare and Aiodun Oyegoke of Nigeria 6-0, 6-1 in the first round before beating Margret Olagundoye and Ayoola Shelle of Nigeria 6-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.

Nandini in partnership with Khanitta Sritawan of Thailand lost 2-6, 3-6 to Heidi El Tabakh and Yomna Farid in the first round.

Jaco and Manoj lose tamely: Jaco Mathew and Manoj Mahadevan lost their second qualifying round matches without a fight, after both had enjoyed a bye in their first round, in the $10,000 ITF Futures tennis tournament in Pattaya, Thailand, on Sunday.

Manoj lost 3-6, 1-6 to Duck-Hwan An of Korea while Jaco failed to win a game against Matthew Smith of Britain.

Vijay Kannan, Mustafa Ghouse, Vinod Sridhar, Sunil Kumar and Ajay Ramaswamy will be staking their challenge directly in the main draw.

Tushar loses in semifinals : The second-seeded Tushar Liberhan lost in the semifinals to the ninth-seeded Steven Moneke of Germany 1-6, 6-3, 0-6 in the ITF grade `IV' junior tennis tournament in Bangkok, Thailand. Tushar had beaten Kirati Siributwong of Thailand 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.

In the doubles final, the third-seeded Tushar and Andrew Coelho of Australia went down with guns blazing against Syrym Abdoukhalokov of Kazakhstan and Steven Moneke of Germany 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (2-7). The duo had beaten Worapat Arthiratpanya of Thailand and Manu Bajpai 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 in the semifinals.

Asha Nandakumar's fine run in the girls singles came to an end as she lost 4-6, 3-6 to Anastasia Poltoratskaya of Russia in the quarterfinals.

In girls doubles final, the top-seeded Vandana Murali and Madura Ranganathan lost 6-4, 4-6, 4-6 to the third-seeded Ayu Fani Damayanti and Joana Febri of Indonesia. The Indian pair had perspired past Emily Kwok of Canada and Daowadueng Phonkan of Thailand 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals.

Meanwhile, the second-seeded Jung-Yoon Shin of Korea and Pooja Kommireddi lost 2-6, 1-6 to Damayanti and Febri in the semifinals.
